'they' in E is not clear....whether 'they' refers to eating habits (noun) or young female ballet dancers (noun again)

IMO (A)..

E as explained -- they can refer to gymnasts or habits.

I appreciate your reply. But in case of E , they clearly refers to the gymnast and not to the habits...as habits do not desire to be slim....Can you explain this now?

Nitinj is right...they refers to eating habits in E because it nears to that noun...hope it helps...........

why is option A correct? fail to maintain good eating habits caused by the desire to be as thin as possible seems weird
