Calculus, a subject offered to high school students planning to attend college involving the study of change, is used in the science and engineering fields, because it focuses on limits, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series.

IMO A.

Calculus ,a subject offered to high school students planning to attend college involving the study of change, is used in the science and engineering fields, because it focuses on limits, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series.

All other options use 'and' in between - wrong.

here is why i think (B) is correct:

Calculus...involves the study of change AND is used in the fields of science and engineering...

In (A), apart from "involving" not being parallel to is. The use of the in "the science and engineering field is wrong.

Hope this helps.

The key here is to avoid modifying college with the phrase 'involves the study of change. Answer (A) implies that students are planning to attend a college that 'involves the study of change'. We can get rid of (A), (C), and (E). We can also eliminate (D) because it uses the relative clause 'that involves studying change' that once again incorrectly modifies college.

(B) 'Involves the study of change' properly modifies Calculus. However there is a small problem - I think somebody forgot to the add the comma :). See the phrase, 'a subject...' is a nonessential clause and thus needs to be set off by commas on both sides, once after Calculus (as shown) and once after college (not shown). Therefore (B) should read:

(B) to attend college, involves the study of change, and is used in the fields of science and engineering, because it focuses on

(A) to attend college involving the study of change, is used in the science and engineering fields, because it focuses on
(B) to attend college, involves the study of change, and is used in the fields of science and engineering, because it focuses on ANSWER
(C) to go to college involving the study of change, and is used in science and engineering fields, because it was focusing on
(D) to attend college that involves studying change, and is used in the science and engineering fields, because it focuses on
(E) to attend college involving the study of change, which is now used in the science and engineering fields, focuses on
