Hi Guys,

OG E12 DS Q32:

Jerry bought 7 clothing items, including a coat, and the sum of the prices of these items was $365. If there was no sales tax on any clothing item with a price of less than $100 and a 7 percent sales tax on all other clothing items, what was the total sales tax on the 7 items that Jerry bought?
(1) The price of the coat was $125.
(2) The average (arithmetic mean) price for the 6 items other than the coat was $40.

My answer is B. Hwr, the OA is E??? Pls help!!!

(1) Clearly INSUFFICIENT.
(2) AM of 6 items other than the coat is given as $40. Thus, of the 6 items, assume cheapest cost of the item as $0, we get $80 for the most expensive item of the 6. Therefore, this proved that there is no items in the 6 items that are above $100. The sum of the 6 items can therefore works out to be 6x$40=$240. Given total prices as $365, therefore the coat costs $365-$240=$125. Since we only got 1 item (coat) that is above $100. We can apply the 7% tax to $125. Therefore SUFFICIENT. Isn't it?

Some explanation would be appreciated. Thanks.

St. 1 ) clearly it is insufficient as we only know the price of coat i.e. 125
so left amount is 365 -125 = 240
St.2 ) is also insufficient
Neurosage u considered one item say near about 0$ and for it max value of any item as 80 $
just consider this way the cost of two items near about 0$ so cost of 3rd item will be around 120 $ for avg . of 40
say cost of 3 items is nearabout 0$ so cost of 4th item would be around 160 $



also we don't know the cost of coat here...

combined ) we know the cost of coat but other item's cost range still in vague...we can't decide that way...so insuff.

Likewise,we can assume 3-4 cases.
1)Sales tax on coat + 1 item
2)Sales tax on coat + 2 items
3)Sales tax on coat + 4 items



For each case,we will get different sales tax.

Also,it is not written if the price is in dollars only.Likewise,you can consider the price in cents also.
Hence,we do not know which case is being described in the question.
Hence,both the statements 1 and 2 are insufficient.
