Dude,

Don't let the lack work -ex pull you down. You have an excellent GMAT score. Use that.
While shortlisting universities, pay attention to class profile statistics, this will tell you which colleges look at people with low or no Work Ex.

I'm sure you'll have a high GPA as well, use that for your advantage.

In your essays, talk about your internship experiences, what you have learnt from them. Talk about the business that you started, how you went about it, why you started. Tell them how an MBA will help you grow from here on.

Leverage on what's going for you i.e. Good GMAT, High GPA(i'm assuming) & The business that you started

Trust me you've got a solid app!
Cheers!!

I am hoping to apply in 2011 but unsure. I am moving to DC and still studying for the GMAT. I would realy like to go to Georgetown PT but need a score of 670. I just took my first practice test and scored a 520. So I may have to wait till 2012 to apply.

Thanks Iceman, though I am looking for B School in Marketing area.
Please let me know what do you think about Smurtfit vs Iowa State University.

But as per your choices, I am not sure why you choose HULT. They have very good reputation, but their ROI is not as good as reflected as per alums. Moreover, in long term HULT is in a bit back seat compared to other colleges.

As per Canadian Schools, this is somewhere I may help you, as that was my target area for MBA.
Schulich(York University) & Ivey School of Business are quite reputated. Queens does have a good brand name for marketing.

Alright Guys,

Here Goes:-

GMAT_1986_Subha - I don't know much about Smurfit, but i've heard its a good school. But, its in Ireland, UK. This means it'll make it harder for you to get a job Read up a lil on the new visa and Work permit regulations for UK. I've heard they're not good for Indians especially, plus from most of my friends who have finished studying in UK have told me the employment scene is not good for Indians.
Iowa is a good school, but they're not very friendly for ppl with a 3 year undergrad degree (THe problem i'm facing), its good for marketing, u might wanna compare the marketing faculty of the 2 schools to make an informed decision. Stuff like how many PhD.'s in the faculty, Electives offered by them, Marketing club and activities of the clubs etc. One more important thing look at the median & mean salary offered in a marketing function. Check if it matches the area of marketing you want to get in to.

As far as HULT goes, its a Safe school. See my biggest problem is, I have 3 year undergrad degree and most colleges in the US seem to be allergic to a 3 year undergrad degree. HULT accepts it I know for a fact, Iowa would have been an option for me, but they say they evaluate it on a case by case basis. Which makes life hard for me. My Shortlist looks like this

Aspirational Schools:-
1) ISB - (No degree problem here, Thank God! Hope I get in. Really pinning for this one)
2) National University of Singapore - Damn good college, I suggest you have a look at it
3) Space to be filled

Realistic Schools
1) Grea Lakes School of Management - Good school in India, got a lotta engg here, but they are constantly lookin for diversity
2) Thunderbird - Great Program Global mobility, good for marketing
3) Southern Methodist University - Nice school, well ranked, well regarded in the US. Good for marketing too
4) Space to be filled

Safe Schools
1) SPJain Singapore Dubai - Good school
2) HULT - Their Boston, San Francisco Campuses are good & Dubai has a good place ment record. London & Shanghai are decent. If you can suggest some alternatives, I'd appreciate it

As far as Canada goes, its a damn good place to go to. Schools are good, good place to live, give you a 3 year work permit automatically, Canada has a lotta jobs. Only problem, They are highly allergic to a 3 year degree. Haven't found a school yet that takes a 3 year degree. Still looking... Will check out the schools mentione by you

Prachich 1987
U've got a good GMAT score, a definite advantage here's wat i say about your choices
HEC - They have an option where they evaluate your profile and tell you in a week or so, I suggest you do that. I was also looking at this program, Ur work ex might be a lil less for this place. But i'm sure you could cover it up. Submit ur profile to them for an evaluation.
They told me, work ex was good (5 years +), just improve GMAT score (Can't go through it again)
Schulich - Again great school, hope you have a 4 year degree. They seem to want High GPA also, which i'm sure you would have. Your GMAT again solid, Work Ex. could be an issue but a minor one, whcih can be over come by well written essays
ISB - Work for this, u've got a damn good shot here. basis ur GMAT score.
SPJain - This should be your safe school
Thunderbird - Your GMAT will cover up for you r lack of work ex.

For all these schools ur essays will have to be well written explaining or work ex.

Guys also I suggest you look a Business work rankings, along with the ranikings they provide a profile of each school which has some very interesting statistics.

PS - I'm still stuck in my shortlisting would appreciate the help. Also i won't do a 1 years master's coz according to me its a counter productive excercise to srudy for a year just to have a shot at studying for an MBA program. The master's would be useless. MBA is not an end, but a means to an end (End here being an opportunity to make lotsa money!!!!! Let's face it we all wanna!!)

Cheers!!
Cheers!!

@Iceman1294 : thanks for your comments.HEC is my dream school.
I already sent my profile to HEC for evaluation 10-15 days back.I got a +ve response.
On the website of HEC ,they write they need candidates with international exposure.Unfortunately I don't have that.still i am going to apply by the second last deadline (6th September). The next deadline is on 30th May.But I wont be ble to make it.:(.Any ideas what would be the chances of getting into HEC if I apply so late.
I wish I could apply for fall 2012 as that program is better than d one which starts in january :(
What are your view on IE?
I heard getting into IE is easy. But Indians with IE MBA face problems while finding jobs.
Thanks!

Alright Guys, Here Goes:-

@ankurmit - If ur retaking ur GMAT in June (First of all hats off for having the strength and the patience of going through it again), I suggest you concentrate on that first, they'll be plenty of time to shortlist. If ur looking at the US only, check out US News rankings, they will give you rankings function wise. Also check out Business Week rankings they also profile schools and give us insightful stats.
Basis my research, besides the top 25, good marketing schools are Indiana University, Duke, Ohio State University, Darden, Wisconsin Madison(Only good fro marketing, very wel regarded for it), Boston University, Texas A&M, Texas McCombs etc. These are just basis my research. US News rankings will help you out a lot here.
Lemme know how it goes, maybe we can work together!

@prachich1987 - Great to hear about your HEC feedback, if its your dream school, GO FOR IT!!(My dream school is ISB, I know i have barely a hope in hell to make it. But I'm still going for it) What they say in that is a very initial estimate, So which means they're telling you that in your essays show some international exposure. Here use your essays to talk about projects or assignments that you might have worked on with global implications, or when you had to work with people from different parts of the globe, or just go with by saying, "One of the main reasons I want to come to HEC is to get International Exposure".
These are few routes that you can take.
Being an International Student try submitting your application as soon as possible(Although usually for all schools applying by the second deadline is good enough), try speaking to a professional admissions consultant. Even I'm taking help now, coz i realise its very important. They'll help you build a strong story about yourself and also tackle the international experience program. Apply for Fall 2012 if you feel that is better suited for you. You will be at an advantage, coz you'll have more work ex. to take with you.
As far as IE is concerned, there is a forum topic here somewhere on IE, try speaking to them.
But, you are right, I have heard horror stories also. My suggestion, before applying anywhere in Europe, check European Work Permit situation, also the individual country's. I have heard that they are getting stricter and tighter by the day. I strongly suggest you look at them, also speaking to an admissions consultant will give you some insight.

Lemme know how it goes!
Cheers!!

Thanks guys.

@Iceman thanks for your input. Will look out details about all these colleges after GMAT.

I know that most of 1 yr mba programs are in Europe but I ma afraid about post MBA aspects there so decided to apply in US schools also.

@Prachi regarding IE my fnds provided me negative reviews.better to confirm as its a big investment in terms of both money and time.

HEC seems good!!

@Iceman, I appreciate your suggestion regarding UK/Ireland region. Quite Right I believe.
ISU is always a safe school for me. My Main targets are ISB or Mays. I'll look in NUS in case it can make me interested. :)

@Prachi, IE Business School may be a risky choice. Reason:
a. not a great Career services cell
b. spain and L.America centric
c. not as remunerative as other B-Schools (though this i think is a Bias).
d. the need to know spanish is, if you are looking to seek a job in Spain.

@ankurmit, I like to select 5 colleges during my GMAT exam which comes as free. As you have scored 650 already, I am assuming that you can crack 690+ in retake.
My Suggestion of 5 Schools:
1. ISB [May not be in US, but better than lots of US colleges]
2. GeorgiaTech [Rising Star Now a days :)]
3. Duke Fuqua
4. Mays Business School [Safe choice]
5. Smeal B School

Cheers!!!!

@ashwindoke,660 is a good score actually if it can coupled with Good Application.
I am not sure about Tepper, but ISB can be considered as a stretch Target. Concentrate on your essay & recommendation. They need to be very good for gaining interview in ISB.

NUS, NTU & SPJAIN are Reach schools as per my opinion with your score & experience.

I would like to suggest you to choose 1/2 safe schools to apply.

Hope this post could help you :)

Hello,
I hope you have taken enough time to concentrate on your essay questions. Trust me, it is maybe the most important aspect of the entire application process. Poor essays will not lead you far.. even if you have brilliant GMAT and GPA scores.. remember B Schools always want to see more than just grades and scores.
I hope you are focusing on the essay questions. From my side i am planning to apply in round 2 of most schools that will give more time to think about/write my essays.

REMEMBER: DONT RUSH, TAKE YOUR TIME TO PRESENT A WELL ROUNDED APPLICATION THAT WILL CATCH THE EYES OF THE ADMISSION OFFICER.

Hope my advise will help, let me know.. in total 4 of my friends went to top B Schools and i can assure you that on average it has taken each one between 8 to 10 months of intensive preparation.

All the best

Dear Ashwindoke,

I would suggest you consider taking the GMAT again, seeing u come from an engineering applicant pool, ur score of 660 might be considered low.

However, there might be an alternative, i.e., focus on making your application completely different from what any regular electrical engineer's might be. Stress on unique achievements. Portray what sets u apart from the other 1000 or so engineers who might apply to any school you are looking for.

I suggest you take the second option, coz, i'm sure it'll be a lot of of fun to portray a different side of urself.

Also check out this school called Great Lakes, made by a lot of Ex ISB people. I think your profile (based on what has been shared by you) would fit well there.

Lemme know!

Cheers!!
