I recently took the GMAT for the third time and scored a 710 (Q48, V40) but scored low on the AWA (4.5 / 38%). Should I consider retaking? I would prefer to apply round 1 for Fall 2011, but don't want to limit my chances for admittance. I am applying to top 10 MBA programs (HBS, Stanford, Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, maybe others). I have two years of investment banking experience at a bulge bracket bank and two years at a middle-market private equity firm. White-male, leadership role in charity organization. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Dear Dexter123,

In my humble opinion, I would not retake your GMAT because of your AWA. Schools use it differently and vary in how much significance they give it. Most schools hold your essays and interview with the greatest significance when judging your communication skills, so make the most of those two components of your applications. I agree that you do need to apply in the first round if you can, but don't rush an application for a deadline. Better to submit the day after the round 1 deadline with an awesome set of essays than submit by the deadline with mediocre essays. Congratulations on your new score!!
