36/Indian Male/Civil Engineer/GMAT 650

by neekhra » Mon Sep 30, 2013 1:20 pm
Hello,

I have
GMAT - 650
Bachelor's in Civil Engineering with 3.59 GPA in 2001 from a state level school in India.
Within top three students in the class in my undergraduate studies.
MS in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station in 2004.

I would like to change career at this stage to management consulting. My career growth has been steady and have some managerial level experience. I have been involved in more of technical designs and project management type work. I have had moderate involvement in extra curricular activities. I am targeting UT Austin as my first choice and Mays at TAMU as second. What chances do I stand given my age and moderate background. Will taking GMAT again and scoring close to 700 help my chances of admission? Would you recommend any other tier schools for me?

Thanks

Sidd

Sidd--I think you are targeting the right range and should have a shot. CAreer progression will be important to demonstrate, and targeting regional consulting firms will likely be the best bet. Highlight the management and leadership experience which could translate well into solving problems for other companies as you weave a thread through your career story which includes how you will leverage the MBA towards becoming a valuable consultant. If you think you can reasonably achieve a 700, I would retake but a 650 is a good score, so don't let additional test prep interfere with time spent crafting a quality application. Let us know if we can help.
