I am at a loss here...

I started with a Kaplan's test to see how I stood and I got a 580 before ever really starting the studying. I was encouraged after hearing these are tougher than most others.

After studying a week I took a MGMAT and got only 550.

Now, 2 weeks later, I take the GMAT Prep Practice 1 which is supposed to be an actual indicator and it is a 490?!


I'm at a loss here for what is happening and not sure how to revamp my efforts. Books I own:

OG- all 3 but just bought today and not used much yet. Wanted to do a practice test without seeing duplicate questions and a non-reflective score of my abilities.

Kaplan-have been using about 100% of the time. Working mostly on quant as that is consistently my low area.

    It sounds like you're taking a lot of practice tests, which is good. But what you want to do is go back and drill, looking through literally _every_ single incorrect answer and figuring out the correct answer and how.

    I agree...I need to do this better. On the GmatPrep test I didn't see that it actually gave you the explanation with the correct answers. Am I missing something here or are we left to figure those out on our own?

    GMATPrep does not provide answers to the questions; you must figure them out yourself (luckily there are forums out there that already have answers for almost all the questions: *ahem* BeatTheGMAT.com). In any case, perhaps the difference in scores that you saw had more to do with the difference in questions and by that I mean that the Kaplan questions are well known to be "different" from the OG questions. No third party company can create questions like GMAC can.

    In any case, study the OG for a bit and see how your next few cats go. Be sure to focus on quality over quantity!

    Thanks for your responses. I was pretty frustrated yesterday. I think I am just going to work my way through the new OG books and hope that works for me.

    How many Gmat Prep tests can you take before you see repeat questions? I think I heard it was 3?
