Stacy,

I was wondering what you think about my chances of getting into a top ten school with these stats but limited work experience. Do you have any helpful advice in this process? Do I have a decent chance?

Top 15 University in US
Economics Major, Business Minor
3.7 GPA
770 GMAT (51M, 46V 5.5 AWA)

Work
1-year at Bulge-bracket in Investment Banking/Capital Markets, laid off due to terrible market.
The past year I have been aiding my parents small business in this tough market.

Extracurricular
Tutoring underprivileged students on an individual basis (starting a summer classroom program for underprivileged youth)
Active member of church, participating in variety of monthly service projects
Amateur musician

Dear V074886,

Based on your high GMAT and GPA, I do think you have a shot at a top 20 school. What will make a difference for you will be how you present your work experience and rationale for business school; basically, it comes down to your essays, recommendations, and interviews. I would suggest doing a good amount of research to identify the schools that are the best fit for you and coming up with a target list of 5-6. On your list, you should have a couple of safety options (probably in the 15-40 range). Once you have your schools identified, it would be good to visit if you can and establish a rapport with someone in the admissions office. Finally, you want to apply in the first round, so this is definitely the time to get started.
