I narrowed it down to D & E, but ultimately chose D.
thephoenix - can you just explain this part "therfore it has to use a contrast word----> and is wrng so eliminate A,C and E.... " would 'even though' not be considering sufficient? this is what threw me off

the choices using conjunction AND are wrng bcoz and introduces continuation of idea it does not change the direction ; here the requirement is of a change in the direction in s/c .money9111 wrote:I narrowed it down to D & E, but ultimately chose D.

In E
even though they beat in unison, they adopt.......or........even though they beat in unison and adopt.....
luk at abve one is with and and anothere without and ......the s/c without AND shows contrast in sme respect but the s/c with and never begins any contrast
just for sharing information when to use Although and Even though
although .......its...positive, the result is .......negative.
the relation of first clause and second clause will be positive and negative
even though(reverse of although)
i guess i read this in KAPLAN

I personally think this question tricky/difficult and here's one interesting explanation i found. Hope it helps y'all to understand the question better :
1] so the statement says "adhere to one another" --> means they stick together
2] later the statement says that even though they are together they do "exclusive" things
3] so we are looking for something which which says that first part and the second part are contradictory to each other.
(A) beating in unison and adopting -- > it is linking the 1st and 2nd part together using "and"
(B) they beat in unison while adopting -- > doesnt make 1 and 2 opposite of each other.
(C) beat in unison, and adopt -- > same , makes 1st and 2nd part relate to each other.
(D) beating in unison yet adopting -- > yet makes the 1st and 2nd part oppose each other
(E) even though they beat in unison and adopt -- > again , has a "and" which makes 1 and 2 relate to each other.
(D) is Correct
