12 teams tournament

by sumithshah » Wed Aug 20, 2008 4:01 am
If each of the 12 teams participating in a certain tournament plays exactly one game with each of the other teams, how many games will be played?

A. 144 B. 132 C. 66 D. 33 E. 23

I thought it would be 12+11+... until 2 - but seems not.

Can someone throw some light on this.

You are not far, just draw 12 balls and join them if you are not sure.
Indeed, that is
11+ 10 + ... + 1

For calculating this sum use that: n(n+1)/2
11*12/2=66
