A peculiar feature of the embryonic mammalian circulatory system is that in the area of the heart the cells adhere to one another, beating in unison and adopting specialized orientations exclusive of one another.
(A) beating in unison and adopting
(B) they beat in unison while adopting
(C) beat in unison, and adopt
(D) beating in unison yet adopting
(E) even though they beat in unison and adopt

Hello, I cant seem to understand why the right answer in this case is D...I would have thought C...please help!

Hello, I cant seem to understand why the right answer in this case is D...I would have thought C...please help!

You need to indicate contrast to distinguish "beat in unison" and "adopting
orientations exclusive of one another".

C creates a parallel form that does not indicate contrast

D correctly creates contrast and also maintains parallelism

The important thing in this sentence is to bring out the contrast...otherwise the "peculiar feature" mentioned in the stem won't be highlighted....So eliminate C,E and A...Between D and B....I would choose D....the use of the word they is unneccesary

The option E also berings out the peculiarity.Do we reject E because of the comma before even though.

C fundamentally is wrong.

Here is the basic difference.

(1) I passed the exam, working hard and sleeping properly. [ A ]
(2) I passed the exam, working hard yet sleeping properly. [ D : OA]
(3) I passed the exam, worked hard and slept properly. [ C ]

see the difference in meaning between 1 and 3.

2 problems with E

1. use of 'and' instead of 'yet'

2. meaning of the sentence as I explained earlier.
Actually : beating in unison, adopting specialized orientations : are the additional information for the main clause.
the are telling how the process is done [ How]

but E is not conveying this meaning. -> [ How : not conveyed ]
