I've narrowed it down to A or C.

I don't particular like the "herself an escaped slave" in A or the "for guiding" in C.

"so as to guide" is incorrect, which eliminates B and D, E is just wordy.

On the actual test, I'd just pick A.

herself should be after noun. So

C- an escaped slave herself - is correct

"for guiding" by itself is correct, but the idiom, I believe, should be return TO not return FOR.

TO GUIDE OTHERS TO FREEDOM is correct
Eliminate c/d/e

Though an escaped slave herself sounds more appropriate….. but C has been eliminated
B has being ..

So best answer is A

Whats OA ?

IMO (A).

(A) and (D) are pretty close choices. However, if we reconstruct the statement with both options:

A: Before the Civil War, Harriet Tubman, herself an escaped slave, returned again and again to Maryland to guide other slaves along the Underground Railroad to freedom.

D: Before the Civil War, Harriet Tubman, herself as an escaped slave, returned again and again to Maryland so as to be the guide of other slaves along the Underground Railroad to freedom.

The statement (D) lose its charm. Check the statement above, highlighted with red color.

"so as" is almost always wrong on the GMAT

Further, the idiom here is 'to guide' and not 'for guiding'

Hence, IMO A

It seems everybody has narrow down to different answers to reach to A.

Anybody from the moderators please tell the authentic reasons for eliminating the choices in this one

As far as my understanding

so as to is wrong usage in GMAT (B and D eliminated)...read in Sahils notes
for the guiding of seems wrong...E eliminated

Decide between A and C (to guide vs for guiding) i.e infinitive v/s participle

I thought C but OA is A

Kindly point out my mistakes :)

Between A and C I choose A based on idiom usage
A -- returned ....... to
C -- returned .......for ---> I think this is not correct
