Hi,

I chose C) but the answer is E). Could you explain why C) is wrong? :cry:

300. Following the destruction of the space shuttle Challenger, investigators concluded that many key people employed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and its contractors work an excessive amount of overtime that has the potential of causing errors in judgment.
(A) overtime that has the potential of causing
(B) overtime that has the potential to cause

potential of causing
potential for causing discard
its practise of overtime that causes error in judgement.
not overtime alone.
so discard A B C


that remain E.
in fact E doesnt make best sentence still i t has to be... :?

The answer should be E.
It should be the 'practice of overtime and not just overtime' that can potentially cause errors in judgement.
I have started to realize that I am the one!!!

Sometimes it is best to rewrite the sentence when it is as long as this one.

Therefore consider the following:

Investigators concluded that many people work an excessive amount of overtime that has the potential of causing errors in judgment.

Without any analysis the revised sentence just sounds horrible.
Just like the original sentence, options (A), (B), and (C) present ambiguity; it is unclear what ‘that’ is referring to.

Furthermore, (D) must be eliminated because of verb tense. ‘Causing’ does not parallel ‘work’.
By process of elimination one is left with the answer (E).

Now try substituting the answer (E) with the underlined part of the new sentence up above.

Thats a great question....I am waiting to see if anyone has an answer on this.

I dont have one, save that, the rest of the options are bad based on grammar wheras redundancy is a style-based rule and not necessarily a grammar based rule.
