His studies of ice-polished rocks in his Alpine homeland, far outside the range of present-day glaciers, led Louis Agassiz in 1837 to propose the concept of an age in which great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas.

(A) in which great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas
(B) in which great ice sheets existed in what are now temperate areas

I chose D but i'm not sure when to use "in" vs. "when"

IMO B

A&D incorrectly uses the past perfect HAD.no need of past perfect.moreover We need a simple past tense. Because LED and EXISTED are not related

C&E When is used to modify a specific time and THE CONCEPT being the noun is a hypothetical condition/arragement/IDEA etc that uses the modifier in which. Age is not the noun because it sits inside a prepositional phrase.+in which should be used for Age (long time period)

Hi,
D can't be the correct answer.Just read the answer choice D.

D. when great ice sheets had existed in current temperate areas

This changes the meaning of the sentence as it says that temperate areas exist when there was a great ice sheet.
so this can't bethe answer

A and D : no need of past perfect: eliminate
C: the areas still exist today : elimnate
E:no need to have 'that are': eliminate


I am not sure about option E tough......
