Freud’s theories of the workings of the mind, while brilliant for their day, were formulated before most of this century’s great advances in neurophysiology and biochemistry. Today, we have a far deeper understanding of the biological components of thought, emotion, and behavior than was dreamed of eighty years ago. It would be foolish to continue parroting Freud’s psychological theories as if these advances had never occurred.
It can be inferred from the passage above that the author would be most likely to favor
(A) the abandonment of most of Freud’s theories
(B) a greater reliance on biological rather than psychological explanations of behavior
(C) a critical reexamination of Freud’s place in the history of psychology
(D) a reexamination of Freud’s theories in the light of contemporary biology
(E) increased financial support for studies in neurophysiology and biochemistry

IMO A. coz auhor critizes the theories badly and it should be A, the abdonment of the theories. OA is D. I am not sure how it can be D.

Question:
It can be inferred from the passage above that the author would be most likely to favor

(A) is wrong, the passage states: Freud’s theories of the workings of the mind, while brilliant for their day, were formulated before most of this century’s great advances in neurophysiology and biochemistry. The author is giving credit to Freud's theories given the limited technology and understanding for the time.

(B) is out of scope IMO, from the passage: Today, we have a far deeper understanding of the biological components of thought, emotion, and behavior than was dreamed of eighty years ago. It would be foolish to continue parroting Freud’s psychological theories as if these advances had never occurred. The author does not favor biological explanations over psychological explanations. The author favors the current understanding given the advances in neurophysiology and biochemistry vs. Freud's understanding from 80 years ago.

(C) out of scope. The passage does not discuss reexamining Freud's history in psychology. This is supported here: Freud’s theories of the workings of the mind, while brilliant for their day...

(D) best answer. The passage does infer rexamining Freud's theories given the advances of today. This is supported here: Today, we have a far deeper understanding of the biological components of thought, emotion, and behavior than was dreamed of eighty years ago.

(E) out of scope and irrelevant.

To summarize the passage:
The passage mentions Freud's theories and today's theories. He favors today's theories based advances in neurophysiology and biochemistry. He questions the accuracy of Freud's theories given the lack of advancement compared to today.

With that in mind, reread the answers and see which on fits best. You'll see (A) and (E) are out immediately. (B) and (C) are out of scope. (D) is the only practical inference given the passage.

He doesn't criticize the theories badly. He says the theories were brilliant in the day, but outdated due to scientific advancements.

Answer D (as others have said) summarizes this thought that his theories would need to be updated and reexamined in the light of science.
