712. The commission acknowledged that no amount of money or staff members can ensure the safety of people who live in the vicinity of a nuclear plant, but it approved the installation because it believed that all reasonable precautions had been taken.
(A) no amount of money or staff members
(B) neither vast amounts of money nor staff members
(C) neither vast amounts of money nor numbers of staff members
(D) neither vast amounts of money nor a large staff
(E) no matter how large the staff or how vast the amount of money


Hi, The correct answer is D) but why "large staff" is okay? I think it should be "large number of staff"..... so confusing.

Well I'm no expert and I can't totally justify this...

You have a 'neither/nor' construct where the piece after the neither and the nor both have to be parallel. So for what you were saying you would need...

neither vast amounts of money nor a large number of staff members

But I think even that is incorrect. D seems correct.

What is wrong with "numbers of .." in option C? It there a grammatical or logical mistake ?

C absurd meaning :

numbers of staff members can ensure

lets say :

numbers of staff members -> 100

so the sentence is

100 can ensure

what I want to say that
it should be 'large staff' or 'many staff members' as the subject of 'can ensure'.
numbers can't be the subject of 'can ensure'

vasts amounts of money -> indicating to money

while numbers of students -> indicating to some numerical integer

some expert comment more on this.

What's wrong with A is that it's impossible to have an amount of staff members, because staff members are countable while money isn't.
