Wine cork

by GmatKiss » Sun Aug 28, 2011 2:08 am
Wine Company Representative: The corks of red wine bottles pose a threat to the environment because they are treated with chemicals that are especially toxic in landfills. However, the new cork that our company developed, which will be adopted by the entire red wine industry, represents a solution. Since the new cork is natural and not treated with chemicals, when the industry completes its transition to the new cork, there will no longer be any threat to landfills from red wine corks.
Which of the following, if true, most weakens the argument above?

A) The industry's transition to the new red wine corks will take years, allowing thousands of old corks to pollute landfills.
B) The new corks are more expensive than the old corks.
C) The new corks take considerably longer to produce.
D) Production of the new cork emits more toxic fumes than were emitted in the production of the old cork.
E) Even after the industry's transition to new corks, a large number of wine bottles with old corks will continue to be consumed.

OA after some discussion

What is the source?? Take a question from one source, change the subject and verb, change the topic, but keep the reasoning EXACTLY SAME and you have a new question !!
If the source is powerscore bible then fine as they have exactly similar question...
But if the source is not powerscore, then the question is just a change of subject and verb and no change of reasoning...
Answer is E !!

Should be E.
D could have been a powerful choice if the argument had concentrated on Generic pollutant.
This time no looking back!!!

I have to agree with everyone else and say 'E'. A-D include reasoning that are outside the scope of the argument, but 'E' shoots down the argument that "there will no longer be any threat to landfills from red wine corks."
I don't know what to say, really. Three minutes to the biggest battle of our professional lives. You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite catch it. I'll tell you this, in any fight it's the guy whose willing to die whose gonna win that inch. That's football guys, that's all it is. Now, what are you gonna do?

OA:E

OE:
A)The timing of the industry's transition is irrelevant due to the qualifier in the conclusion: "when the industry completes its transition to the new cork."
B)The cost to produce the new cork is not pertinent in a consideration of landfill pollution.
C)The time taken to produce a cork does not impact matters of pollution.
D)At first glance, this answer has some appeal. However, the conclusion relates to pollution in a landfill--not fumes omitted into the air during production.
E)This statement properly identifies a weakness in the conclusion.

guys,
the OE seems flawed. Notice the explanation for E, something that best suits B.
what's the source of this problem???
