which round to apply

by vishugogo » Tue Jun 25, 2013 10:51 am
Dear All,

Just needed an insight regarding a doubt with respect to admission rounds. If I fail to apply in R1 and apply in R2 is it that my chances of getting selected in the respective b-school will be less.

Dear Jon,

My test date is 16 september 2013.Will it be ok to apply in R1 because I do not have much knowledge regarding how to approach different schools essays so I think it will take some time.

Hey there,

Keep in mind, while some schools do favor R1 applicants, a poor application in R1 is not worth more than a good application in R2 simply because it comes in earlier. Taking your GMAT in the middle of September really cuts down on the time you have to put in R1 apps. Sure, you could do it, but be honest with yourself. If you can put forward a more articulate application in R2, then you should.

You are correct when you say it will take some time to work through your strategy by school and complete the applications. You shouldn't underestimate the process.

Good luck on your GMATs!

Hey there,

Most programs have spring deadlines with some notable exceptions (e.g. MIT). However, these dates represent R3 and should be used only as a secondary strategy. R2 deadlines range from the end of November through February and should be the ones you target.

If you want to read more about how to select the right round for you, we wrote a blog post that might help you. You can find it here.

Hope that helps!

Vish-

I believe folks worry way too much about R1 vs R2. True that in R1 no seats on the bus have been taken and adcoms segment and compare folks by profile type. But your chances are much more diminished by rushing. I track results in my own business and there is little statistical difference R1 vs R2. My "n" is of course smaller given I run a boutique shop, but the bottom line is don't rush. If you have strong MBA vital signs, they will give you a fair look!
