which program?

by anirudh316 » Sun Oct 16, 2011 10:51 am
Hello,
I am confused whether I should apply to a 1 year or the traditional 2 year program. I have around 3 years of entrepreneurial experience, and would be returning to my business. What's the difference between the 2 programs?
Also, Should I pursue the general MBA or an international MBA or a dual degree?
Thanks!!!

Its like two cars packaged with different feature sets, designed to suit the one who wants to buy them.

One year MBA is more rigourous because of the curricula crunching, no luxory of summer internship but is less costly. One year MBA is for people who are mostly established in their career and want a reputed credential. If you are young(I mean younger), then go for 2 year MBA. Enjoy the experience.

For me, which MBA will come from what I want to do in my life post MBA.

If you are not sure about that then look at the factors which will govern it? Like cost, placement importance, location where you want to settle, or any other commitment. Your candidature will also be a constraint, so you need to strike a balance. Read a few good books to explore. Find it out and start preparing.

Oh! that's a lot of questions!
It depends on YOU. Anyhow in the US there are very few one year programs, so it wouldn't matter two much. There are many considerations but basically the advantage of a two year program is its length which allows you to dedicate more time, and build closer relationships as well as do an internship. The advantage of one year programs is that it costs less and you get out faster. But there are a lot of differences on a program by program basis, and there's no substitute for individual research.

As for double degrees, again this depends more on what you want. If you think you are dedicated enough to deal with the workload and want the degree, I would say "why not"??? After all, you don;t pay much more and you do come away with a second degree.

Hi Anirudh,

If time is not a constraint we would advice to prefer 2 yr mba than 1 yr mba. Opportunity to do an Internship is there in 2 yr mba. Would that be something of interest to you? If not than 1 yr mba would serve the purpose. The curriculum is almost the same for both MBA's. You would need to see which universities you are comparing. 1 yr course are generally more rigorous. Keeping the positive points and negative points in consideration please make a decision. Not many schools in US will have 1 yr MBA although in Europe this would be more visible.

Great replies guys!!
Thank you so much!!
So from what I can understand, if I am going to change my industry/career track, I should go for the 2 year MBA program for the internship?
Also, is there a difference in the "VALUE" of the 1 YR VERSUS 2 YR program, when considering the salary after graduation?

Not really. MBA graduates get offered what they get offered. What would change the value more would be the fact that you would work likely in Europe where salaries are significantly lower (but benefits can be much higher)
