In the array of numbers below, each number above the bottom row is equal to three times the number immediately below it. What is the value of x + y?

27 x 81 -108
9 -18 27 36
3 -6 y -12
1 -2 3 -4

A. -45
B. -15
C. -2
D. 20
E. 77

The OA is A.

x = three times the number immediately below it, so x = 3*(-18) = -54

y = three times the number immediately below it, so y = 3*(3) = 9

x + y = -54 + 9 = -45. Option A.

We see that x is -18 * 3 = -54

We see that y is 3 * 3 = 9.

Thus, x + y = -54 + 9 = -45.

The OA is A.

x = three times the number immediately below it, so x = 3*(-18) = -54

y = three times the number immediately below it, so y = 3*(3) = 9

Hi AAPL.

According to the statement, we have that $$3\cdot y=27\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ \ y=9.$$ $$x=3\cdot\left(-18\right)\ \ \Rightarrow\ \ x=-54.$$ Then $$x+y=-54+9\ =\ -45.$$ Therefore, the correct answer is the option A.
