Tom,Dick and Harry

Tom, Dick and Harry went for lunch to a restaurant. Tom had $100 with him, Dick had $60 and Harry had $409. They got a bill for $104 and decided to give a tip of $16. They further decided to share the total expenses in the ratio of the amounts of money each carried. The amount of money which Tom paid more than what Harry paid is

A. 120
B. 200
C. 60
D. 24
E. 36

Well,sometimes it is useful to just estimate the values instead of accurately calculating the answer.
I guess such type of questions help us in making accurate estimates as we practice again and again.
Sorry,If you felt that it was out of the normal league.
Example:-Taking 1/3 instead of 0.33,,1/9 instead of 0.111 and so on.
Keeping in mind the fractional alternative of a decimal no. do come in handy sometimes.

Alright, let's approximate 309 × (120/569)

It's nearly equal to 310 × (120/570) = 310 × (12/57), nearly equal to 310 × (4/19) = 310 × (1/5) = 62...and what's OA?

I don't think such tough approximation would come in real exams. though a small approximation could really be given in exams to just test how do we analyse things...

Also the question does not ask for the approximate answer it asks for an exact answer ...so i dont think such questions will be asked in the test.....

The question seems to be wrong...since money that TOM had < Money that Harry had ...so how can he contribution of Tom be more than that of Harry (as per the question)?

Wrong Question....Or the Figures in the question are wrong..(409....should have been 40)

The question has a typo, which I've corrected above. The amount for Harry should be not $409 but $40.

Total paid is 104+16 = 120.
Fraction paid by Tom = 100/(100+60+40) = 1/2. So Tom paid 1/2*120 = 60.
Fraction paid by Harry = 40/(100+60+40) = 1/5. So Harry paid 1/5*120 = 24.
Difference between Tom and Harry = 60-24 = 36.

The correct answer is E.

Thanks GMAT GuruNY. I just got this Q and was confused as to how can Harry have more money than Tom and yet pay less (Step says: "amount of money which Tom paid more than what Harry paid ".
After your correction it makes much more sense and is fairely straightforward to come to respond

Tom % - Harry % = 120 ((100-40)/(100+60+40)) = 36

Blasted typo messed me up. I knew something was wrong when I saw the end of the question. Guess I can't feel too bad for getting it wrong. :/

Total paid is 104+16 = 120.
Fraction paid by Tom = 100/(100+60+40) = 1/2. So Tom paid 1/2*120 = 60.

when I read the question, I saw a problem in the question "The amount of money which Tom paid more than what Harry paid is " with 100:60:409. plz correct question

i think the question posted to us is wrong.there is some miscalculation in values.
