Applying from Canada: GPA Conversion

by jonathanylee » Sun Dec 21, 2008 3:34 pm
Hi Stacy,

I completed my undergraduate degree in Canada and am applying to US Schools - how would I go about converting my % or letter grade into a 4.0 scaled GPA?

I have found "official" table conversions on the Internet, but am unsure whether I should calculate at a course level or end of year average (or whether or not these conversion tables are even legitimate - I downloaded one of the tables from my undergraduate program's website)

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jon

Dear Jon,

I'm not sure how reliable or accurate any charts on the web are; I'm sure some are legitimate and get you close to the right number. Many schools have their own conversion table, so you might check with any of your target schools to see if they have one you can use. The most reliable conversion, which will work for any school, is through a credentialing service like World Evaluation Services or Global Credential Evaluators, but they will charge you. Most schools are familiar with the grading systems in other countries, so you are probably fine using a conversion table that you find from a legitimate source.

Good luck,
Lisa
