where to find 700-800 level questions

by yankees660 » Thu Mar 26, 2009 1:43 pm
just took a mgmat practice and got 45v/45m. on the Verbal side, got 8 SC wrong but only 700-800 level questions. on math, got mostly 700-800 level questions wrong as well. i am looking to get more practice in these 700-800 level questions but am not sure the best place to find them. i have the 3 OG books as well as all the mgmat red books.

thanks

I can't speak for the MGMAT books, but you're not going to find a whole lot of 90th+ percentile quant questions in the Official Guides. On one hand, I'm kinda glad that the OG omits those really tough questions since most people don't have to worry about them and they would just cause undue stress, but on the other hand, high scorers like yourself need some practice material, too. The verbal section of the OG more realistically reflects the upper bin material than does the quant section, in my opinion.

So, you'll have to rely on other materials beyond the OG for quant, but others will have to chime in with more specific recommendations...

thanks for the reply. that actually makes sense bc i had a pretty high hit rate for both Q and V using the OG books but my Q score was worse than my V score on a % basis.

would appreciate if anyone has recommendations for more advanced Q questions

I have heard that the challenge archive is unrealistically hard (like you will never see that hard of question on the real thing). Anyone else heard this?

We use a body of our own super challenging questions in our material - - which are a varied group of questions that demonstrate the questions you'll see on the test.

When I worked at Princeton Review, they had a really great source for hard questions - - not sure how they use them, or if they use them still. Maybe the PR person will respond.

Some people also like the Kaplan's 800 book.

but bottom line is none of them are 'free.'

although you may never see anything as hard as the questions in the MGMAT challenge archive on the actual GMAT, it could only be to your benefit to have a greater understanding and grasp of the subject matter. i think that it is foolish to dismiss the usefulness of something because it may be above your ability level. for instance, you don't need to know trigonometry for the GMAT, but i have definitely used it to solve for some different GMAT problems.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this post. One of the biggest mistakes I see students make is that they get "obsessed" with the harder material at the detriment of studying the fundamentals, then wonder why they got 20th percentile on quant. The reason, of course, is that they didn't study what they actually saw on the test.

I can't tell you how many students I've had who keep asking about ridiculous super-hard combinatorics or probability questions when they aren't yet proficient at your run-of-the-mill algebra word problem or yes/no data sufficiency...

So, to save your sanity (and that of your teacher, if you have one!), make sure that you actually ARE in the 90th percentile before you worry about the super tough stuff.

Once you've taken both GMAT Prep tests, I found it useful to continue to take these tests to extract as many real upper bin questions as possible. This is because the OG doesn't really have many tough questions and questions produced by prep companies are never perfect.

You can even get creative and use VMWare software to snapshot your system state in the middle of a GMAT Prep test so you effectively have 'save points' in the middle of the test. Doing this allows you to treat GMAT Prep like a video game in which you have multiple saved games and you can really experiment and hammer out how the algorithm works.
