710 in 4 Months!

by ritesh21 » Thu Jul 17, 2014 10:28 pm
Hello everyone

I need to get a score around 710 to get into the b-school that I want. I am planning to prepare for around 4 months, 3-4 hours everyday on average. Purchased OG 13th Edition and the whole set of Manhattan Books. After solving about 100 OG quantitative questions I came to know I have to really work on my basics as I could hardly solve 50% of the questions.

Is it possible to get 710+ on my first try with the resources I have? I am very cash strapped and cannot spend more. As I am from a non English speaking country, need to work on my Verbal a lot too. Please guide me experts as I don't have many good GMAT experienced people here who can guide me .

Hi Ritesh,

Several fact that you should know about OG 13 Quant section are
1) The question are comparatively much easier than actual GMAT Problems therefore to know the actual level of the right set representation of GMAT questions, I suggest that you take one GMAT PREP test.

2) The number of Questions (225 PS and 176 DS) are not sufficient for the entire practice therefore you should refer to the more sources e.g. Quant and Verbal Review Books by GMAC, Manhattan Books 5th Edition etc.

3) OG has jumbled questions and attempting questions straightaway doesn't help improving basics. Therefore one should understand basic concepts (from Manhattan Books or some other concept book e.g. Kaplan) and then try questions from OG. Trying Questions without knowing the basic concepts is something I call Waste of OG questions which are Very limited in Number

710+ isn't an easy score and requires a lot of practice. Your time estimation for GMAT preparation looks apt however I suggest that a Trainer guidance can contribute greatly without which 710+score might be too difficult.

All the best!!!

Hi ritesh21,

A 700+ score represents the 90th percentile, meaning that 90% of Test Takers either can't or won't do what it takes to score at that level. Until we know a bit more about your strengths and weaknesses, it would be difficult to assess your study plan or your chances of hitting your goal. As such, you should take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT and report back with your scores. You'll likely have some difficulty with it, but that's okay. We need to get a sense of your "starting ability", so we can figure out what you'll need to spend time on.

You can download 2 CATs for free from www.mba.com. Make sure to set aside 4 hours (that's the approximate amount of time needed to take a CAT) and report back here with your scores. With that information, we can flesh out a plan.
