what doors does a good gmat score open?

by mrmojo » Sun Oct 16, 2011 9:26 pm
Hi,

My situation: I am a 30 year old engineer working in Calgary, have an undergrad and masters in engineering, and have worked in a few locations in Canada and the US.

I wrote the GMAT in January 2007, and scored 750. My initial aim was to go into finance, but then the crisis hit and I chose not to attend the grad programs in finance I was accepted to at that time.

Now my GMAT score is nearing the 5 year expiry mark, so this is my last chance to apply to MBA programs with this score. The reason I am thinking of applying is that I am not thrilled with my engineering career thus far (most engineering for is rather commoditized, not much creativity, teamwork or technical depth is required). However I am not certain an MBA program is for me as they lead to corporate jobs which I'm not sure i'm interested in, and the classes don't send my pulse racing.

So my question to you is: do MBA programs have a realistic chance of leading to anything other than a corporate job? Are there any alternative programs to the MBA which also recognize the GMAT score that you would recommend? I'd prefer to end up working in Canada, unless there was some amazing international opportunity.

If you can offer any advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Not really an advice, but (coming from a similar profile) let me share my thoughts on your questions.

"do MBA programs have a realistic chance of leading to anything other than a corporate job?" Yes, and personally, I believe that this is one of the most underrated/unexplored aspects of the MBA experience. There is no limit to what you will open your mind to, once you enter the MBA world. There is enormous diversity of experiences & perspectives. You have time to reshape your career. And the top schools provide a lot of resources for that objective. MBA is the most general form of education in the market and thereby you get a taste of almost all work streams. Most people end up taking the corporate route because it is lucrative & immediately paying. Nothing stops you from forging your own career path & taking it forward.

"Are there any alternative programs to the MBA which also recognize the GMAT score that you would recommend?" Not really. You could look at some reputed dual degree programs, but (to me) other options don't really fit in with your experience level.

Good Luck!

Hi mrmojo,

To further on Color Me One's post, there are a number of doors that an MBA program can open. Here is an article about the growth of social entrepreneurship in business schools, which is normally not thought of when one thinks of an MBA program:

Hope this was of help.
