can you please.

inform me,

how to differentiate a Noun ending with 's' and the Verb ?

Ranks - noun/verb

SO how can we identify the verb ending with "S" is truly the verb and not Noun ?

Is there any Thumb rule ? for this ?

ethics, politics, gymnastics, dynamics,etc--all of them end with 's, yet are not plurals most of the time. Here, native ears help or at least familiarity with the language does. Rules are dime a dozen: ya know of exceptions when ya are surrounded by a language community.

Palvarez is trying to say that the difference inanswer choices is between "ranks" and "rank" and that this is the most important to look for.

He says that "diabetes" although has an s at the end, it is NOT plural, BUT singular. He gave some examples.

can we say 1 diabetes, 2 diabetes, 3 diabetes ? NO; when when say that someone has blood sugar dysfunction, you say "he/she has diabetes" and here he/she doesn't have more than one illness of this uique characteristics, only one.

Received a PM asking me to respond. Remember that we are not allowed to discuss OG questions on the forums. :(

I will mention that the other posters are right about the main verb. In the original sentence, the form of the main verb is "ranks."

I didn't know about restrictions on OG items. We aren't allowed to discuss OG questions on the forums, or just not allowed to post the entire item including answer choices because of copyright restriction?

The answer to how to tell that "ranks" is a verb is that the sentence makes perfect sense if it is, and it's gibberish if "ranks" is a noun. In other words, context.

GMAC has formally requested (via letters sent by legal counsel) that nobody post OG questions online; they are invoking their copyright on OG questions. I don't think they'll go after individual students, but they may go after test prep companies who break the rules, so we (MGMAT instructors) don't discuss them on public forums! You may want to have a conversation with your legal counsel to see what they recommend.
