best supports the claim

by gmatnmein2010 » Tue Feb 09, 2010 10:43 pm
Potato cyst nematodes are a pest of potato crops. The nematodes can lie dormant for several years in their cysts, which are protective capsules, and do not emerge except in the presence of chemicals emitted by potato roots. A company that has identified the relevant chemicals is planning to market them to potato farmers to spread on their fields when no potatoes are planted; any nematodes that emerge will soon starve to death.
Which of the following, if true, best supports the claim that the company's plan will be successful?
(A) Nematodes that have emerged from their cysts can be killed by ordinary pesticides.
(B) The only part of a potato plant that a nematode eats is the roots.
(C) Some bacteria commonly present in the roots of potatoes digest the chemicals that cause the nematodes to emerge from their cysts.
(D) Trials have shown that spreading even minute quantities of the chemicals on potato fields caused nine-tenths of the nematodes present to emerge from their cysts.
(E) The chemicals that cause the nematodes to emerge from their cysts are not emitted all the time the potato plant is growing.
I chose A and I was wrng Y????

Which of the following, if true, best supports the claim that the company's plan will be successful?

(A) Nematodes that have emerged from their cysts can be killed by ordinary pesticides.
Incorrect : If the cysts can be killed by ordinary pesticides, it will not support the claim that the company's plan will be successful.

(B) The only part of a potato plant that a nematode eats is the roots.
Incorrect : Does not support the claim that the company's plan will be successful.

(C) Some bacteria commonly present in the roots of potatoes digest the chemicals that cause the nematodes to emerge from their cysts.
Incorrect : This weakens the plan by implying that if nematodes dont emerge from their cysts they will not harm the potato crops. Hence the company's product might not be successful.

(D) Trials have shown that spreading even minute quantities of the chemicals on potato fields caused nine-tenths of the nematodes present to emerge from their cysts.
Correct : This one is giving proof that spreading minute quantities of the chemical on potato fields has the desired effect. So it supports the company's claim.

(E) The chemicals that cause the nematodes to emerge from their cysts are not emitted all the time the potato plant is growing.
Incorrect : Frequency of the emergence of the chemicals is not an issue here.

A is wrong it is giving another reason of eliminating Nematodes that have emerged from their cysts rateher than supporting the claim that nematodes that emerge will soon starve to death.
therfore its incorrect
IMO D is correct bcoz the trials prove the desired result
rest
B) C) AND E) are irrelavant

1 min 50 sec

My stake on B

It is given that the pesticide should be spread only when there are no potatoes.

Now, to support the use of pesticide, we have to prove some way that the nematodes do not harm potatoes once they grow.

B, clearly says that nematodes affect only roots. That means spreading of pesticides when no potatoes are there would prove to be fruitful.

I rejected D only because "spread on their fields when no potatoes are planted"

What would happen -if the nematodes emerge out only when there are potatoes in the field?
D- does not indicate that the 9/10 nematodes will come out when pesticide is spread when no potatoes are present

I may be possible that 9/10 nematodes come out only when the potatoes are there in the fields.

What you say?
