They in option c can refer to 2 things, hence i chose option D.

jyotiistalking, I agree with you that 'they' in C is ambiguous. Also C only refers to "past indiscretions" without making clear that the issue is *their* past indiscretions -- they could be anybody's past indiscretions. And D just sounds tighter and smoother. It has a better rhythm, and "prove embarrassing" doesn't have the unnecessary "to be".
