station wagon

by gmat009 » Fri Oct 17, 2008 6:37 pm
Due to the fact that Jordan wrecked Bono's station wagon during a road trip last summer, she has not been and probably never would be allowed to drive her father's car.

(A) has not been and probably never would be allowed to drive
(B) has not been allowed to drive and probably never will be allowed to drive
(C) has not and probably never would be allowed to drive
(D) has not and probably will never be allowed to drive
(E) has not and probably never will be allowed to drive

Plz. explain .........

I guess it is a correctly formed sentence.

she has not been and probably never would be allowed to drive her father's car.

when you split the action still happening and the hypothesis:
she has not been allowed to drive
probably never would be allowed to drive

both are good enough and clear.

(B) is redundant
(C) been is required (still happening)
(D) been is required (still happening)
(E) been is required (still happening)

OA?

A: probably and would are redundant. They both denote uncertainties. Also we need future tense 'will' and not the past tense 'would'

B: Correct: 'not been allowed to drive' and 'never will be allowed to drive 'are parallel

C, D and E have a common problem. 'Has not....be allowed to drive does not make sense'

We have to break both parts of the sentence 'has not' and 'never will be' and connect it with 'be allowed to drive' and see if both the parts separately make sense.
