Skewed GMAT

by mmayad » Sat Oct 11, 2008 1:54 am
Dear stacy,

I am worried about my GMAT score breakdown. I scored in the 79th percentile in quant, and the 97th percentile in verbal for a total of 730. I realise that my overal score is competitive for the schools I am applying to (rotman, stanford, boston, vanderbilt and columbia), but will the low quant score hurt my chances badly?

Should I retake the test...please advise me

Thanks

Dear mmayad,

I do not think you need to retake the test and do not feel your quant score is something to worry about based on these numbers. If you retake the test, it is possible your quant could go up but your verbal go down and result in a lower total score. I think it is best to highlight your quantitative skills in your essays and resume.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
I was wondering if I stand a chance to get into a top school.
I want to part time MBA from either Stern, GSB or kellogs
I did not do well on GMAT.I got 640 and have engineering and masters degree in engineering. My GPA in master was 3.25
I have been working for last 4-5 yrs and career graph is in upward directions LOR can say that
I am not sure if I stand a chance in any of these schools.
Thanks a ton
San

Dear San,

Going forward, please only post your question in one thread and not multiple places on the website.

Honestly, I would say your chances are pretty slim at those schools with your current profile. This will be a highly competitive applications season. I would encourage you to both retake the GMAT to try and increase your score and consider adding some other schools to your list that have GMAT averages closer to the 630-670 range.

Good luck,
Lisa

Dear Lisa,
Sorry about that. The first time I posted my message, I could not see it so I posted it again on different thread. Apologies.
Even for part time the GMAT score requirement is that high?
What else can I do to increase my chances?
Thanks,
San

Dear San,

For top 20 programs, there is usually not much difference in their class profiles between the full time and part time programs. The average number of years of work experience and average age is usually a little higher with part time programs, but the GMAT, GPA averages tend to be similar. Your 640 is probably not out of range, but it will definitely be at the bottom of the range.

Good luck,
Lisa
