Given --------- 2015 --- 2014
Toys sales ----- 112 --- 100 (assumed)
Books sales --- 0.83x -- x (we cannot assume 100 since in that case we would unduly assume that books sales = toys sales)

Total sales in 2015 = $(112 + 0.83x)
Total sales in 2014 = $(100 + x)

=> 98% of (100 + x) = (112 + 0.83x)

98 + 0.98x = 112 + 0.83x

x = 14/0.15 = 1400/15

We have to get the value of 100/x, which is 100/(1400/15) = 15 : 14

Correct answer: E

Hope this helps!

Solution:

We can use the following fact:

If the overall percent change the two groups, group A and group B, combined is m, group A has a percent change of a (where a < m) and group B has a percent change of b (where b > m), then the ratio of group B to group A is (m - a)/(b - m).

Using the fact above (by letting the revenue of toys to be group B and the revenue of books to be group A), we have (notice that here, m = -2, b = 12, a = -17):

revenue of toys/revenue of toys = (-2 - (-17))/(12 - (-2)) = 15/14.
