SC - Comparison

by karthikpandian19 » Wed Jun 06, 2012 12:14 am
According to Booker T. Whatley's recent analysis, planting the same crops as are planted on large farms will lead to economic disaster for the small farmer, who should plan a succession of high-value crops that will provide a year-round cash flow.

(A) planting the same crops as are planted on large farms will lead to economic disaster for the small farmer, who
(B) it will lead to economic disaster for the small farmer to plant the same crops as on the large farms; they
(C) economic disaster will result from planting the same crops as large farms to the small farmer, who
(D) economic disaster for the small farmer will result from planting the same crops as on the large farms; they
(E) the small farmer planting the same crops as are planted on large farms will lead to economic disaster; they

I checked the answer as C, but it is wrong
OA will be shown after few threads

We can straight away eliminate B, D and E because 'they' is ambiguous.C is wrong because 'planting the same crops as large farms' compares the crops to large farms which is incorrect.
Hence, IMO A. Here, use of same crops as are planted on large farms correctly compares the crops planted on the 2 types of farms and who correctly refers to small farmer

I understood your explanation, but is the A

"same crops as are planted...." sounds awkward to me. Can you clarify?

Let me give you an example:
He is performing the same experiments as are performed in large-scale laboratories.

Does it make sense now?

And 1 small mistake in my earlier post: I mentioned earlier that use of same crops as are planted on large farms correctly compares the crops planted on the 2 types of farms. Actually, 'as' is comparing the act of planting of the crops in the 2 types of farms mentioned. (crops are same in both the farms)

IMO, This statement employs the concept of Ellipsis.

The statement can be interpreted as under,

According to Booker T. Whatley's recent analysis, planting the same crops as [crops/same crops] are planted on large farms will lead to economic disaster for the small farmer, who should plan a succession of high-value crops that will provide a year-round cash flow.

Going further, as said by Ashujain, this statement finally tries to compare the act of planting in large scale and small scale farms.

Experts please review my understanding and advise it its improper.
Regards,

Pranay

(A) has no error.
(B) Word "they" lacks a clear precedent - Farmer here is singular so they cannot refer to farmer
(C) Incorrect comparison, "planting crops" compared with "large farms" and that is illogical comparison
(D) Word "they" lacks a clear precedent - Farmer here is singular so they cannot refer to farmer
(E) The word "they" lacks a clear precedent - Farmer here is singular so they cannot refer to farmer. Hence (a).
