B: suffer wrong use of present tense. 'if they are born ... twenty-four' seems like 'they' is referring to Americans born before 1905. Also, wrong conditional clause formation, correct one, : if + present + then + will + simple verb.

C: have suffered looks like all of them are still alive. 1955 do by the Americans born after 1955 do something to get depressed.

D: 'Major depression' can't be the subject. Also, non-parallel: 'by the age...by only one percent ... by age twenty-four by the ...'


E: distorts the meaning, 'suffer major depression ... only one percent of the time'

In option A, "of" is used in 'by the age of seventy-five', but not in 'by age twenty-four'. If "of" implied in 'by age twenty-four'?

I don't understand why A is correct..??
It contains "Since" and the Past perfect tense in the 2 clause, whereas 'Since" only take the present perfect tense (As per the rules)

I am a novice but IMO, using past perfect makes sense here because if you apply logic, there are two past events indicated:

- Born before 1905 (past)
- Suffered depression by the age of 75 (past)

Correct me if I am wrong.

BTW, options C, D, E don't fit in and B implies that American still suffer which is incorrect. Hence answer has to be "A"

First, non underline portion is,

Option (A) is the correct choice asit uses past perfect tense because major depression or its effect is continuous and both of these sentences are independent and related as we are talking about Americans.Hence (a).
