A recent study of ancient clay deposits has provided new evidence supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other creatures some 65 million years ago.

See , This sentence has more to do with the style.
First of all, we need to understand that new evidence has provided the support for the theory ..... and yes theory is not of global forest fires....... but theory says that global fores fires contributed to the extinction.......

Once we identify the correct meaning, we can eliminate A C and E .. for distorting the meaning...

Now if you read D, the construction........

in support of the theory that........X.......and that...........Y.
wrognly compares X and Y suggesting that both X AND Y are two separate theories........

In fact, both X and Y ARE parts of one theory........

This fact is correctly stated in B

3. that supports the theory of global forest fires that were ignited by a meteorite impact and that (change the meaning forest cause dinosaur extinction
4. in support of the theory that global forest fires were ignited by a meteorite impact and that (like 2)
5. of support for the theory of a meteorite impact that ignited global forest fires and (that)
miss "that" ( and that ....)
