Chances at T10?

by Karembeu » Mon Dec 07, 2015 12:03 pm
I originally wanted to apply this year for matriculation in 2016 but got sidetracked and am now thinking it's too late and I should wait another year.

Based on my profile, I'd appreciate if I could get some input on my chances at a top 10 school. Obviously, I'd like to go to a top 3 but I am well aware that my profile is less than ideal.

Asian, 27, male. (Applying next year, so I will be 29 by matriculation)
UCLA economics undergrad, 3.55 GPA (improving trend with 3.7 and 3.8 in my last two years)
730 GMAT (73 %ile quant, 96 %ile verbal, 8 IR, still awaiting AWA score)
5 years work experience at two companies doing fp&a. First was at a major defense company (1 promotion). Current job is at a major asset management company (expecting promotion in 2 months). Non-managerial position but have essentially acted as a team lead at both companies. Multiple awards at both companies.
Basic volunteer activities such as at a food bank, CHOC, etc.

Thank you all!

Hi Karembeu,

From what you have shared it sounds like you've got a great profile for the top 10 schools. Are you just focusing on US schools? If not, usually international experience is important to schools abroad.
Your academics are great - your gmat is fantastic. You've got some great work experience under your belt and sounds like you have some leadership experience. It really depends on what you can show from your work experience eg what kinds of projects and accomplishments (and do these stand out compared to other candidates), how you demonstrated your leadership, career progression (sounds like you will be promoted) how well you work in teams but seems like you have some awards to stand for this.
In terms of extra curriculars, seems like you've got some experience here - but you mentioned 'basic' so not sure of your involvement. This might be lacking then compared to other candidates. It's never too late to get involved with something now. What about hobbies and passions? These too can also make you unique and well rounded.

If you would like a more comprehensive assessment, we would gladly do this for you (free for 30 minutes).

Good luck with everything
