So What are My Chances?

by bass » Thu Mar 13, 2014 12:35 pm
Hey

I'd like you to asses my profile:

Indian Male, 25
BS in Biology 3.2 GPA (This was a three-year degree. Will that be a stumbling block? Also, this the cumulative GPA, worked hard and managed a 3.6 in my Last Year of Graduation)
GMAT - 790

After college, I was a full-time musician for two years. Did loads of gigs, played with some big people, etc.

A year in a start-up in the education sector.

Current Job: Two years at a Digital Marketing firm - working with clients across domains such as oil & gas, travel, banking, etc. Involvement in three verticals of the company. I'm also Reporting to the GM of one of India's biggest private sector companies.

Google Analytics Qualified

I have also completed two online programs:
Content Marketing Strategy by Northwestern University (Brownie points for Kellogg?)

A Online Calculus Course offered by UPenn on Coursera - I did this because I wanted to showcase some proficiency at Math & Calculus since schools like to see it and I've been out of touch at it since high school.

Volunteer Work includes working for an organization that caters to mentally challenged children. Also experienced in working with a Department of The Police that helps women who've suffered hate crimes.

Post-MBA - I would like to work in a Management Consulting.

Looking at schools like Kellogg, Tuck, Columbia, Darden and Fuqua.

Thanks.

Hi bass,

Thank you for your post!

1) In regards to your academic record, you have a highly competitive GMAT score (something that could also help with your consulting plans). It's great that you have taken some online courses to demonstrate your quantitative acumen; this will show that your skills are still fresh. Your undergraduate GPA is a bit below average for the top programs, but still solid. Your GMAT score and recent courses should quiet any potential concerns. Per your specific question, it should not be a "stumbling block" that you earned a three-year degree (programs typically just require a bachelor's or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university). An upward trend in your performance is certainly a positive sign as well!

2)Your music background should help you stand out in the admissions process, as this is highly unusual for typical MBA applicants.

3)In terms of your work experience since then, it looks like you've accumulated some diverse industry exposure, which should allow you to bring a useful perspective to classroom discussions. When detailing your work experience, you will want to emphasize the quantified impact of your work and highlight your leadership experience.

4) As the top b-school programs will also be looking at your community involvement, it's great that you have some options here. Ideally, the initiatives you listed are long-term and ongoing.

5) While you have many strengths in your profile, you will want to flesh out your career goals more. Many MBA applicants will be looking to enter the field of consulting. Therefore, another way to stand out in the admissions process is to dig deeper into why you are interested in this path, which firms you would want to join, and what impact you would like to have. Keep in mind that the adcom will also be looking for your long-term plans (5-10 years after graduation).

Based on this initial information, you would be competitive at the schools you list (Kellogg, Tuck, CBS, UVA / Darden and Duke / Fuqua). If you'd like to discuss your profile and fit with these programs further, please reach out to us at [email protected].
