Will job move hurt application?

by as51 » Tue Jan 07, 2014 4:15 pm
Hi there!

I'm currently working for a consulting firm where I've steadily progressed over the past three years or so, and I'm thinking of applying to B-schools during the Fall of 2014.

I just got an offer to move to a new city to work with a different manager on a slightly different line of business. While that sounded attractive initially, I also realized that by the time I prepare my B-school applications later in the year, I will have spent less than a year in this new position, which is not much of an experience.

Any thoughts on whether this move would hurt my application strength? Would I be better off just sticking to my current post until the end of this year, when I can talk about everything that I've done in my current role? I know there are other non-MBA factors to consider when deciding whether to make the move or not, but I'm going to evaluate those separately.

Thanks!

Why would it hurt your application? And why are you moving? Im assuming because its a better job with better pay? In that case it will, on the contrary, HELP your application!!

I agree with Jon, even if it's a lateral move, it can help if it sets up your post-MBA goals. If it's mostly in line with your previous experience, then if it's more responsibility or higher paying, then that's great too!

This sounds like a move within the same company. Would you consider it a promotion? If so, why were you chosen for this opportunity? If the move will not affect what you've accomplished in your current position (which you want to have in your application)and if you are not leaving unfinished work behind that could be to the detriment of your assessment until now, then I don't see how it would hurt your MBA application. I hope you would see this move as being a great opportunity for you and moving in line with your career goals.
