I am confused with the below questions, Can anyone suggest wat should be approach to arrive at answer for below:

The contractor and the engineer agree on the cause of the bridge failure , but both blame the other

A. both blame the other
B. each blames the other
C. each blame the other person
D. both are blaming the other
E. each blames the other

Answer : B (why not D?)


At the orientation meeting, the travelers were told that a visa,a landing card, and evidence of inoculation against typhoid fever would be needed by each of them.

A. a visa a landing card, and evidence of inoculation against typhoid fever would be needed by each of them.
B. they would need a visa, a landing card , and evidence of their being inoculated against typhoid fever

Answer: D (Why not E?)

{A} - INCORRECT; "both" and "other" creates meaning issue; "each other" would have been better
{B} - CORRECT;
{C} - INCORRECT; "blame" doesn't go with "each"
{D} - INCORRECT; "are blaming" & "other" are wrong.. "each other" would have been better
{E} - CORRECT;

E is also wrong because of the misplaced - each of them - this means each of traveller would require evidence of inoculation against typhoid fever.
The intended meaning of the sentence is each of the traveller would require the following things 1) a visa 2) a landing card and 3) evidence of inoculation against typhoid fever

In answer choice B: 'are blaming' is incorrect because this implies that the blame is happening at the same moment as they are agreeing with each other. B is better. 'are VERBing' emphasizes the ongoing nature of an action. Someone please correct if I am wrong.
