Subject/Verb Agreement Drill.

What would be the sentence correction for the example below and do please give the explanation?

A majority of the voters want to unseat the incumbent.

majority/minority usage depends on context

1)If used in part of totality- verb is plural

eg-The majority of the students in the class are hard working.

2)If used as"totality itself" - verb is singular.

eg-The student majority is opposed to death penalty.

So here, according to (1) it will be,

The majority of the voters want to unseat the incumbent.

So does it mean that we ll never use that term as 'A Majority'..
