Profile and Alternatives

Hi,

It's lovely to see all the tremendous help this forum provides people who typically have crucial, career-altering stages of their life looming up ahead of them. I just wanted to convey my sincere appreciation.

I am an engineering graduate from India. I'm employed in Germany in a multi-national consulting firm specializing in niche sustainability consulting for major-league (Fortune 500) corporations across industries. I came here as an intern for 6 months but my employers liked my work and ethic and decided to extend my internship contract for 6 months. Thereafter they offered me a fulltime position as a Consultant.

However, I feel I need to grow now and would like to drift towards more finance-related roles. I have a great aptitude for the subject, having completed more than a couple of financial management and economics courses during my engineering studies (on the side) and having been an economics enthusiast for a long time, also having actively blogged on the subject.

My bachelor's GPA isn't great (around a 3.0 equivalent) but it does not reflect my aptitude (It'd be a long-shot to prove that but I just threw it out there).

I would like to ask you whether I ought to evaluate alternatives to an MBA in Finance such as an MSc. in Finance and how my profile ranks in both?

I'd be tremendously grateful if you could just voice your blunt opinion on what my options and priorities should be.

With an alternate degree:

1. I save time (I don't really want to work for more than another year before applying)
2. I save money

BUT

I might hit a professional ceiling at some point.

To summarize:

1. 1 year work exp.
2. Plenty of international exposure
3. Keen interest and strong soft skills
4. Displayed career growth
5. Low GPA
6. GMAT targeted at (740-760)

I'd love you insight.

Regards from Deutschland,

Arnav

Hi, and thanks so much for your post.
It sounds like you're unsure which career path is the best one for you, as opposed to whether or not you'd likely be admitted? If this is right, then I think that your best next step would really be in doing some additional research at this point as to what you'd want to do, and what people in the industry, both those with MBAs and Masters in Finance Degrees would suggest in terms of your background and goals. I think that based on the information you've sent us, it's very possible that you could be a competitive applicant for both types of programs, so the decision will more likely be based on what it is you want to do with your degree, and which one would be more useful for you in your career.

Best,
