The beautiful cello solo at the end of the symphony may have salvaged the performance, for most of the orchestra members performed poorly throughout the two hour concert.

A- for most of the orchestra members performed poorly throughout the two hour concert.
B- in that most of the orchestra members performed throughout the two hour concert in a poor manner.
C- when most of the orchestra members performed poorly throughout the two hour concert.
D- despite most of the orchestra members performing poorly throughout the two hour concert.
E- Even though most of the orchestra members made a poor performance throughout the two hour concert.

I chose "despite" as correct conjunction neglecting the verb form. Please comment and share examples if you have seen "for" like other awkard conjunctions in past ?

"FOR" is also used as subordinating conjunction to join two independent clauses;thereby, fixing the COMMA SPLICE error along with (AND, OR, BUT,NOR,YET, SO - ANBOYS for short)

FOR is generally preferred over IN THAT ( Refer OG 11 - Q : 51 )

FOR means 'because'

Pretty useful to remember the FANBOYS rule.

From what I gather...words like because, despite, etc. can never follow a comma and act as a coordinating conjunction. Correct?

I think in this question despite would have made more sense than for
I real villian seems to be that comma rather than comparision between despite and for....

even in for means because,if we go for the whole meaning of sentence,
it is not that the .....performance was ....salvaged because others didnt performed well

i think the sentence means....
the performance was..... salvaged finally though.....others didnt performed well

the meaning of the word made a huge difference here
salvage - property or goods saved from damage or destruction
salvage - save from ruin, destruction, or harm

so i took it in case of ....'saved'....
any way GMAT was not that harsh on word meaning
