2 Approaches to RC Passages - Confused

The GMAT library has some really good articles by tutors from various test prep cos. For me RC is a big problem due to timing issues and note taking is a skill i'm trying to develop. So, in deciding a suitable approach to note taking, i zeroed in on these two-

Stacey adopts a detailed passage by passage break down, while keeping in track the function of each passage, whereas Vivian uses an overview method to understand the context of each passage, the author's tone, point and approach.

I'm not debating which method is better, i would merely like to know which method is suited for what type of RC passage!

Both are same except for Vivian's method gives additional importance to author's pov. For long passages this is preferable for short passages the content will be too dense and we have lot of transitions, so one point per paragraph won't work out pretty well for short passages. You should take more notes and be alert for transitions that is suffice.
