Hi Team,

I have taken my GMAT 2 years back with a score of 690 and TOEFL with a score of 120.
I am engineering graduate with a 3.5 GPA.
I have 5.5 years of experience in IT industry in one of the top companies with gradual Promotion/progression in career. I am currently working in US for past 1 year managing a team of 12 at offshore and coordinating around 50 projects in a role of Tech lead.

I have been involved in various initiatives in and out of my company. I have been also been working actively in an NGO and the Social Corporate program before shifting to US.

I want to shift to General management, preferably in luxury or merchandise sector due to personal interest. I need advise on below 2 points:

1. I have shortlisted HEC,SDA and Essec for luxury Management. Can you please suggest if it is advisable to go for a Core Luxury management course or it is better to do a General MBA with related electives? If later, can you please suggest some good schools?

2. Since it is already 3rd round for most of the school, would you advise if I should apply next year? if so, should I retake GMAT?

You're asking good questions here, and I think that I can help guide you towards finding out what you need. First of all, I do think that it makes sense to apply earlier in the rounds than later. Admissions becomes more competitive during the later rounds when many spots have already been filled by qualified applicants. But, I alo might suggest waiting to apply if you think that you can improve your GMAT. Although I don't know the breakdown of your GMAT in terms of quant and verbal scores, it is helpful to have around 70 or 80%ile in each area. Was there a big disparity between the two in your case? Also, if you can improve your GMAT, then you absolutely should! Although your GMAT is only one facet of your academic profile, it is the one facet that you can take control of at this point. Your college GPA and classes are already set in stone, but if you think that you can improve your GMAT score, then thisdoing so would only strengthen your profile!

In terms of your question about whether or not you should study a core luxury management course or a generalized MBA, I think that you should try to think about what your goals are even more specifically after B school, and to contact members who are working in the industry in positions you can see yourself obtaining. They may be able to best guide you in terms of what type of MBA background would be the best choice for your particular career path.

Hi Deena,

Thanks a lot for your reply. I do think i should be able to improve my scores. but in case i am not able to retake, does my existing score hold any value next year?

As for my goals, i would like to join a fashion apparel or cosmetic industry at managerial level. In long term I want to have my own business of Indian silk and apparels.
Most of the core Luxury MBA don't focus in apparel industry. Can you please suggest if I go for a general MBA, what are the chances of shifting to my chosen field?
Can you please suggest some schools that will be good for my goals?
