Algebra - PS

by karthikpandian19 » Thu Dec 15, 2011 7:07 pm
At a certain diner, a hamburger and coleslaw cost $3.59, and a hamburger and french fries cost $4.40. If french fries cost twice as much as coleslaw, how much do french fries cost?

(A) $0.30
(B) $0.45
(C) $0.60
(D) $0.75
(E) $0.90
When i solve this the answer comes to F=1.62$. Can you let me know where i make mistake?
Let a hamburger costs $x and coleslaw costs $y.
Then cost of french fries = $2y
Hence, x + y = 3.59 and x + 2y = 4.40
Subtracting the equations, we get, y = $0.81
Therefore, cost of french fries = 2 * 0.81 =
$1.62
I can recollect that this is a PS 1000 problem and the answer options mentioned here don't contain the correct answer i.e. $1.62 (as mentioned by Anurag in the previous post)

PS1000 is a document with a set of 1000 problem solving questions floating around in the web(Not sure of the source of the questions!)

The answer choices are wrong
It will be 2*0.81=1.62
