mgmat fdp weighted avg problem

Last year, all registered voters in Kumannia voted either for the Revolutionary Party or for
the Status Quo Party. This year, the number of Revolutionary voters increased 10%, while
the number of Status Quo voters increased 5%. No other votes were cast. If the number of
total voters increased 8%, what fraction of voters voted Revolutionary this year?

when i solve this by allegation or weighted average i get a clean solotion :

1.1x + 1.05y = 1.08(x+y)

x/y = 3/2.

hence answer x = 60%.

MGMAT has given a long soln and oa is 11/18 = [spoiler]61.1%[/spoiler]


I am sure I am missing something.

i think i missed the last line as usual.

its asking for

1.1x/1.05y and not x/y.

so its 66/108 * 100 = 61.1 %

Great thread that one Mitch. Alligation is what I prefer on such problems. But I got stuck on a difficult weighted averages DS on GMAT prep-1 which could be better visualized via the equations. So wanna be equipped with both approaches(weighted average equation and alligations).
