I am an Indian male aged 29.
I have a lot of questions specially since I might not be a typical strong candidate for a top B schools. But I am hoping that I ll be able to sell my story. Will my profile appeal to top10 colleges.

weaknesses in my profile:

1. Hotel Management which was a 3 yr diploma(1997-2000). Started working as a waiter in 2000.
2. 54.3 % in Diploma but I presume I would still be in top 25-30%. Im trying to get this frm college
3. In 2004 when the institute started awarding degrees, I took the degree in Dec 2006. Though I had to write 5 papers in 2 seatings. 62.3%
4. worse they had calculated HM percentage from a total of 5000. They killed any hopes of improvement in av by adding total to 600(for degree) and so I ended up with 55.4% overall. A increase of 1% that cost me 2 trips to India.

Strengths

1. GMAT 740 (97) V42 Q48
2. 8 yrs exp. Got 7 promotions in 8yrs. Worked as a Product Manager for IT company which is into Hotel softwares and later helped them set up office in london.
3. GM for last 2 yrs in a company which is into hotels, real estate and restaurant (no s)
4. I am working on a alternative transcript.
5. Worked in Delhi,Bangalore,Mumbai, Sharjah(UAE) and presently in London.

Questions

Acc to u. What colleges should I aim at for a Degree in Marketing?

Hi,

There are plenty of great universities across the world. It all really depends on which location you choose to live in. For example in my situation, I chose to live in Chicago. Then i started researching through their universities to see which one would fit me best and that its an exception for my standard.

I personally think you have a strong background and you would be able to get accepted in one of the top 10 universities.

Do you mind breaking it down by telling us which state you think of living in?

Thanks for the reply.

My knowledge of US states and city is limited. The only criteria for me is a MBA in Marketing. I know this appears vague but which are the top 20 MBA colleges where I should apply.

Hi mohitmathur01,

I think a good first step would be to read the sticky on school selection and start researching the rankings and profiles of US MBA programs on businessweek.com, etc.

As for your profile, I think your GMAT is obviously quite strong and you've shown nice work progression. Your international experience is extensive and interesting. You do not have a "typical" background for an Indian candidate, which may help you stand out from the crowd. I would be concerned about your GPA, and you did not mention any volunteer or extracurricular activities. I would start working on the volunteer/extracurricular aspect of your application if you do not have any.

Good luck!

Hi Amy,

Thank for the reply. I was working on a 1 page resume so did not want to post a message. Fe things I did not mention are

My questions:
1. Do any colleges take 2 batches in a year(like Insead). If yes how can I find out which ones?
2. What aspects of my profile do I need to brush on for a realistic chance to get into Top 1 0US schools

Regards

Mohit

Hi mohitmathur01,

It's not typical for US MBA programs to have several intakes, although part time programs and accelerated MBAs sometimes do. Columbia's accelerated program starts in January. I would pick your list of target schools and visit their websites to see the various options they offer.

As I mentioned before, I think volunteering/extracurriculars something you might want to improve.

Good luck!
