A What was as astounding as the invention of the transistor
B As astounding as inventing the transistor
C Inventing the transistor was no less astounding than
D The invention of the transistor has been none the less astounding than
E No less astounding than the invention of the transistor
IMO E
The two comparable items here are Invention of transistor and development of microprocessor. Hence they need to have similar construction.

A. What was is unnecessary
B. Inventing the transistor..development of microprocessor NOT PARALLEL
C. Inventing the transistor..development of microprocessor NOT PARALLEL
D. Like However / Despite, None the less is used to introduce an idea that contrasts another idea. In this sentence there are no contrasting ideas. Further, None the less...than construction is at best awkward.
E. CORRECT
A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.

It is either A or E. Could you explain more why "What was" in A is unnecessary?
Thank you

Lets strike out What was in A, the sentence makes complete sense. Hence i feel What was is unnecessary.

as astounding as the invention of the transistor has been the development of the microprocessor, which has made possible the proliferation of computing power in devices from microwaves to cellular telephones.
A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.
