Looking for expert opinion take/retake

by hemraajjyala » Wed May 19, 2010 2:05 am
Hi,

I m a working professional in India,2yrs of work exp in facility management (i have a Hotel Management degree). i am not an
academic achiever, and have scored abt 65% in almost every exam (school, grad, competitive etc);as far as academics go.
I will be giving my GMAT next week, even though i do not expect to score above 600 (sounds stupid to give the exam, but i have to take it to know how it will go by) m taking the plunge.i wish to start college from 2011(which is my aim) hence i am confused if i should take a break, get a pvt tutor (i need work on my verbal) and retake the exam. or should i go ahead, accept the marks that i get and start applying.

i have spoken to few friends (both who have done MBA and not done, and are now about 30yrs old) they all have suggest the same; get done with the MBA asap. Though that's not the primary reason for me to do an MBA. i feel i am ready to go ahead (in life) and expand my knowledge.

I have always had an aptitude for bigger things, like i am more interested to know for eg: how does the price rise of a commodity causes a fluctuation in inflation, how it affects the common man OR how does top management decision percolate down though the levels of management and affects the common worker working out in the field etc. and also creativeness interests me, as in i find it more engaging when i am doing something creative. based on this should i go for a General business management or take up Marketing as my specialization.

Any fair college which i can apply to with a score of about 600 and 64% (about 1.5 GPA)
would really appreciate if you can kindly take some time to evaluate and conclude based on the above factors.

Dear hemraajjyala,

Once you have your GMAT score, you will have a better idea of your profile and what schools will be reasonable for your profile. I do think your GPA is probably higher than a 1.5 as the grading scales are quite different between India and the US. You might consider having your transcript evaluated by a credentialing service to get a more accurate assessment. For the best chance of admission, you want to apply to schools where your GMAT and GPA are close to/above the schools' averages and where the curriculum is a good match for your goals. I encourage you to visit our sticky on school selection for tips on identifying programs that might be a match for you.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Thankyou for your inputs. what you say makes a lot of sense; my score was 560, which is pretty low. i am planning to do my own research on the energy sector in India(i feel there is huge potential as of date; people living in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, delhi etc face power cuts as the demand is much higher than the supply) and make a complete report covering
1. The history of the energy sector
2. The current suppliers
3. Current rate of consumption
4. Expected growth in demand
5. How it can be met
6. What would the investment be like
etc
A detailed analysis of the same, based on the free information that i can find over the internet. how vital a role do you think will this own research of mine play in the admission process (i mean i dont intend to do it just for admission, but its something which has intrigued me, plus i ll learn a lot while i do this). I will surely visit the website (i earlier had too), its way too expensive in INR or i wouldn have hesitated to take the services.
Thankyou once again for your help.
