I've narrowed it down to A or C.

I don't particular like the "herself an escaped slave" in A or the "for guiding" in C.

"so as to guide" is incorrect, which eliminates B and D, E is just wordy.

On the actual test, I'd just pick A.

Why it's wrong?

"for guiding" by itself is correct, but the idiom, I believe, should be return TO not return FOR.

Eliminate c/d/e

Though an escaped slave herself sounds more appropriate….. but C has been eliminated

IMO (A).

(A) and (D) are pretty close choices. However, if we reconstruct the statement with both options:

A: Before the Civil War, Harriet Tubman, herself an escaped slave, returned again and again to Maryland to guide other slaves along the Underground Railroad to freedom.

D: Before the Civil War, Harriet Tubman, herself as an escaped slave, returned again and again to Maryland so as to be the guide of other slaves along the Underground Railroad to freedom.

The statement (D) lose its charm. Check the statement above, highlighted with red color.

Further, the idiom here is 'to guide' and not 'for guiding'

Hence, IMO A

C -- returned .......for ---> I think this is not correct
