More and more holidaymakers are choosing to fly to remote islands in search of the perfect beach; seeking sand, sun and palm trees, rather than centers of entertainment.

A. ; seeking sand, sun and palm trees, rather than centers of entertainment.
B. ; seeking sad, sun, palm trees and not entertainment.
C. , with sand, sun, palm trees and no entertainment.
D. , they seek sand, sun and palm trees, rather than entertainment centers.
E. ; they seek sand, sun and palm trees, rather than centers of entertainment.

first we must understand the use of semicolon , a ; should be used to separate two complete s/c

so A is incomplete as their is no sub...........eliminated

B is is incomplete as their is no sub............eliminated

C IMO comma with is incorrect i dnt knw which rule is broken

D correct

E they has an antecedent in previous clause so semicolon can not be used as the two parts are dependent

i clicked "post reply" on this topic, and then was surprised by seeing that others had commented already. how come I couldn't see them before?

My pick is D.
There is no need of ; because we use semi-column when both parts on both side can stand on their own.
If you put semi-column there then it makes an incomplete sentence.
Here they is perfectly referring to holidaymakers. So D is fits the bill.

semi colon is used when two statements can stand independently .Which is not the case in A ,B and E. Hence ELIMINATE

b/w C and D

As i said earlier , short is not always sweet . :)

and D uses the correct idiom rather than.

hence i'd go with D

As per my understanding choice E is the correct answer.

Sentences on either side of the semicolon have a subject and a verb.

Also as per llelism sand , sun and palm are compared with centers.

Sand, sun and palm are not having an adjective before them and hence center of entertainment is preferred to entertainment centers

Sorry, but i don't agree...

The correct answer joins two sentences with a semi-colon.
A and B use a semi-colon incorrectly.
D needs a semi-colon.
C is not parallel.

Onedayi'll

We had the same train of thought except for when we get to C and E. Maybe you could explain why C is not parallel.

I could say, "search or the perfect beach, with:
"¢ Sand
"¢ Sun
"¢ Palm trees
"¢ No entertainment
These are all nouns, just because the last one - no entertainment - is negative doesn't make it not parallel...right?

E - seems to be redundant. Why do we need the pronoun they.

looked at this again. C changes the meaning off the sentence...my bad. It never said they don't seek any entertainment, just that they prefer the beach things to entertainment...

fell into the trap of just looking at the grammar and not reading the meaning

so change that to E

I think the answer should be E.

As a "," cannot connect to clauses. A semicolon or a conjunction is required to connect to clause. As far as the relationship between two clause that is co-ordinating conjunction or sub-ordinating conjunction, we dont have any conjunction so we just have to use semicolon to connect the two clauses.
